Where to Keep Summer Tires and Rims Over the Winter

23 October 2026 by XYZ Storage

Four tires stacked on top of each other, ready to be put into seasonal storage.

Finding somewhere to keep a set of summer tires can be harder than it looks, particularly if the garage is already full. What you need depends on how much room four tires and rims take, and how far you want to carry them. At XYZ Storage, a set of four fits in a compact unit, 4′ × 3′ × 4′, available at all seven of our locations across Toronto, Etobicoke, and Scarborough. Below, we’ll break down the size you need and what a winter costs.

What size storage unit do you need for a set of tires?

A set of four summer tires and rims fits in a compact unit. At XYZ Storage the compact is 4′ × 3′ × 4′, the smallest size we rent, and the description on our storage sizes page names a set of winter tires as an example of what it holds, alongside sports equipment, files, and gardening supplies.

If your tires are going into storage with the rest of your summer belongings, a 5′ × 5′ may suit you better. That size gives you 25 square feet, roughly the footprint of a hallway closet, and it can take a set of tires along with patio cushions, a bike, or camping gear.

Our storage calculator can size a unit from a list of what you are putting in, which saves working it out yourself. If you are not certain which size is right, our storage experts can help you choose.

What affects the cost of storing tires for the winter?

Storage costs can be hard to compare, because not all self-storage providers advertise the rate and the billing cycle the same way. At XYZ Storage, our pricing page carries the current monthly range for every unit size, including the compact, and it’s kept up to date as seasonal offers change through the year.

Two factors affect what a winter costs you:

  • Billing cycle: XYZ Storage bills customers monthly, on the first day of the month, which comes to twelve charges a year rather than the thirteen a four-week cycle produces.
  • Insurance: Insurance for your belongings is arranged separately from the unit itself, which is standard across the category rather than specific to XYZ Storage.

For a figure that applies to the size and location you want, our storage experts can give you one that includes insurance, with no guesswork required.

How do you get a set of tires from the car to your unit?

Five of the seven XYZ Storage locations are designed so you can drive inside, which keeps the carrying to a minimum. Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, and Toronto West have an indoor drive-through design. Toronto Dundas and Etobicoke Kipling have an indoor drive-in design.

Toronto Midtown and Scarborough also have outdoor units, so you may prefer one of those if you would rather park at your own door and unload straight in. Etobicoke Lakeshore has loading docks and elevator access, with dollies at the ground-floor landings.

Dollies are available at every XYZ Storage location, and the hallways are five feet wide, so a set of four can be wheeled to the unit rather than carried. Our storage experts are on site from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, if you’d like a hand with them.

Which XYZ Storage location works best for tire storage?

All seven XYZ Storage locations can take a set of tires. Which one works best usually comes down to how you plan to unload, so the table below sets out what each location offers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get to my tires during the winter?

Yes. Your unit takes a lock that you provide, and you keep the keys. XYZ Storage locations are staffed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, so our storage experts are there if you need them.

Do the tires need to come off the rims before storage?

No. A compact unit at XYZ Storage is sized for a set of four either way. If you are fitting the tires in alongside other belongings, our storage experts can help you work out what will go in.

What size unit do I need for tires and other seasonal belongings?

A 5′ × 5′ gives you 25 square feet, which can take a set of tires along with patio cushions, a bike, or camping gear. Our storage sizes page runs from the compact up to 10′ × 30′, and our team can match a size to what you are storing.

How much does winter tire storage cost at XYZ Storage?

Our pricing page carries the current monthly range for every unit size, including the compact. Seasonal offers change through the year, so that page is the figure to work from. For a quote that includes insurance, our storage experts can prepare one for the size and location you want.

Do you have temperature-controlled units for tires?

Yes. Temperature-controlled storage is available at all seven XYZ Storage locations, and six are temperature-controlled throughout. If you book at Scarborough, make sure to request a temperature-controlled unit, and our team can advise on whether it suits what you are storing.

Is there a minimum rental period?

XYZ Storage bills customers monthly, on the first day of the month, so a winter’s storage comes to a handful of monthly charges. We advise confirming the current terms with the location when you book, and our storage experts can set that out for you.
