Portable Storage Container or Self-Storage Unit for a Move?
Choosing between a portable storage container and a self-storage unit is one of the first decisions a move forces on you. From the outside, the two can look interchangeable. What separates them is practical: where the loading happens, and how often you need to reach your belongings. How long they will be sitting matters too. At XYZ Storage you can move either way. We rent units at seven locations across Toronto, Etobicoke, and Scarborough, and at five of them we can bring the storage units to you. Below, we break down how the options compare and who each one suits. We also cover whether to hire movers or handle the move yourself.
What is the difference between a portable storage container and a self-storage unit?
The difference is where you do the loading and what you can do afterwards. You load a portable storage container once, at your address. It then travels to wherever the provider stores it. A unit at a self-storage location means bringing your belongings to us. You can then walk back in whenever you need something out. Mobile storage from XYZ Storage sits between the two. We bring the unit to your door, then keep it at one of our facilities.
| What to check | A portable storage container delivered to your door | Mobile storage from XYZ Storage | A unit at an XYZ Storage location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you load | At your address, wherever it can be placed | At your address, since we bring the units to you | At the facility, with docks, drive-through access, and dollies |
| Where your belongings are kept | Ask the provider where it goes once it leaves | At the location the units came from | In your own unit at the location you pick |
| Getting back in | Ask the provider how access works in storage | Ask our team how access is arranged | Seven days a week, with 24-hour access available at six locations |
| Billing | Ask the provider what happens if dates move | Monthly cycles, prorated to the day, no hidden fees | Monthly cycles, prorated to the day, no hidden fees |
| Contents insurance | Ask the provider what is offered | From $22.60 a month, including HST, for $5,000 | From $22.60 a month, including HST, for $5,000 |
We wrote that column as questions rather than answers on purpose, because terms differ between storage providers. Two answers change the decision most. First, where the provider keeps the container once it leaves. Second, whether you can get into it while it is there. Our storage experts can walk you through how ours works.
When does a portable storage container delivered to your door make sense?
It suits a move where loading is the hard part. With a portable storage container at the curb, you will not need to reach your belongings again until they arrive at the other end. Everything goes in where it stands. That can mean fewer handling steps and no drive to a facility on moving day. It is a real help if you are packing over several evenings.
The trade is access and timing. A portable storage container that has left your address comes back on the provider’s schedule, not yours. We have also published our own comparison of mobile storage and traditional self-storage if you would like a second read. If you are not sure which way your move leans, our team can help you choose.
When is mobile storage from XYZ Storage the right fit?
Mobile storage is the right fit when you want two things: door loading, and a local facility you can phone. We bring the storage units to you from five XYZ Storage locations: Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, Toronto West, Scarborough, and Etobicoke Lakeshore. Tell our team what you are storing and how long for, and they can suggest how many units to send.
Billing works the same way as a unit rented at the facility. We charge on monthly cycles rather than four-week cycles. We also prorate rent to the day, and there are no hidden fees. So a move date that slips by a week does not cost you a month you never used. If Toronto Dundas or Etobicoke Kipling is closer to you, our storage experts can set you up at the facility instead.
When is a unit at a self-storage location the better call?
A unit is the better call when you will need to get back to your belongings. It also suits belongings that may be sitting for a while. Your unit is yours to visit seven days a week. 24-hour access is available at Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, Toronto West, Toronto Dundas, Etobicoke Kipling, and Scarborough. Etobicoke Lakeshore runs on our published office hours. Those are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
Loading at a facility is lighter work than it sounds. We built our locations around the truck:
- Loading docks: Toronto Midtown, Toronto Dundas, and Etobicoke Kipling each have three. Etobicoke Lakeshore has five, and Toronto Downtown has one.
- Indoor drive-through design: Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, and Toronto West let you pull inside to load. Toronto Dundas and Etobicoke Kipling are drive-in facilities.
- Drive-up units: Toronto Midtown and Scarborough have indoor and outdoor units, so you can park at your own door.
- Dollies: Complimentary moving dollies are on site at every location.
- Temperature-controlled storage: Available at all seven locations. If you book at Scarborough, just ask for a temperature-controlled unit.
Matching the unit size to your load
Matching the unit to the load saves a second trip. Here is how our sizes line up with the truck you may rent:
| Unit size | Holds the contents of | Truck it matches |
|---|---|---|
| 5 × 10 | A sofa, boxes, filing cabinets, and wardrobes | A cargo van or pick-up truck |
| 10 × 10 | A one- or two-bedroom apartment | A 15 ft truck |
| 10 × 15 | A two- or three-bedroom apartment, or a two-bedroom home | A 17 ft truck |
| 10 × 20 | A two- or three-bedroom home, or a small car | A 24 ft truck |
| 10 × 30 | A three- or four-bedroom home, or a large car | A 26 ft truck |
Storing the contents of a home between two closing dates is one of the most common reasons people book with us. Using a unit to bridge a move works the same way. The gap can be two weeks or most of a year. We prorate rent to the day, so a stay that runs past a month costs you those days rather than another full one. Our team can help you pick a size.
Should you hire movers or move it yourself?
Three things decide it: the size of the load, the distance, and how much lifting you want to do on the day. Moving it yourself works well when the load fits a rented vehicle and the destination is set up for loading. You can rent a truck or van for the move. Van rentals are available at Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, Toronto Dundas, and Etobicoke Kipling. Truck rental for your move-in is half price on our Value plan and free on our Premium plan.
Movers may be the better use of a day when there are stairs, or heavy furniture you would rather not carry. A tight window between two addresses points the same way. You can ask our team about moving services when you book.
Either way, we stock packing and moving supplies at every XYZ Storage location. That includes mattress and box-spring bags, sofa and chair covers, furniture pads, and bubble roll. Insurance is the other thing to settle. The storage facility does not insure your personal property for loss or damage. Our contents insurance starts at $22.60 a month, including HST, for $5,000 of protection. It covers fire, water damage, and theft. Most personal policies with off-site protection have a 30-day storage limit, so we advise checking yours. Our storage experts can go through both routes with you.
Portable storage container questions
Is a portable storage container or a self-storage unit better for a move?
It depends on whether you need to reach your belongings while they are stored. A portable storage container delivered to your door suits a move where loading at home matters most. Everything can then sit untouched.
A unit at a self-storage location suits a move where you may need something back. You can visit seven days a week. 24-hour access is available at six of our seven locations. Mobile storage from XYZ Storage sits between the two. We bring the units to you and keep them at one of our facilities.
Does a portable storage container cost less than a storage unit?
Compare the total across the whole period rather than the delivery price. That total varies between storage providers, so ask for it in writing. With XYZ Storage, we bill a unit on monthly cycles rather than four-week cycles. We also prorate rent to the day. There is no term commitment and there are no hidden fees.
Can XYZ Storage bring a storage unit to my home?
Yes, at five of our locations. We offer mobile storage at Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, Toronto West, Scarborough, and Etobicoke Lakeshore. Our team can suggest how many units to send once they know what you are storing.
Can I get to my belongings while they are in storage?
Yes, seven days a week. 24-hour access is available at Toronto Downtown, Toronto Midtown, Toronto West, Toronto Dundas, Etobicoke Kipling, and Scarborough. Etobicoke Lakeshore runs on our published office hours. For a unit stored through mobile storage, ask our team how access works when you book.
What size storage unit do I need for a one-bedroom apartment or a whole house?
A 10 × 10 holds about the contents of a one- or two-bedroom apartment, or a 15 ft truck. A two- or three-bedroom home fits a 10 × 20. A three- or four-bedroom home fits a 10 × 30. If you are between two sizes, our storage experts can help you choose.
Should I hire movers or move myself for a storage move?
It depends on the size of the load, the distance, and how much lifting you want to do. Moving it yourself works well when the load fits a rented vehicle. Truck rental for your move-in is half price on our Value plan and free on our Premium plan. Movers may be the better use of the day when there are stairs or heavy furniture. So does a tight window between two addresses. Our team can tell you what we are able to suggest.
